US Army Col. Robert “Bob” L. Howard Sr., 70, of San Antonio. TX. 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces Military Assistance Command, Vietnam-Studies and Observation Group, SFMAC-VSOG.
Colonel Howard is considered by historians to be America’s most decorated soldiers. He served five tours in Vietnam and was nominated for the Medal of Honor thrice in 13 months and earned the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star and 8 Purple Hearts among his numerous awards.
He was born in 1939 and raised by his grandmother in Opelaka, AL. He joined the army in 1956 at the age of 17. He received a direct appointment from Master Sergeant to 1st Lieutenant in 1969, and was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Richard M. Nixon in 1971.
After retirement from military service in 1992, Colonel Bob Howard was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. He retired in San Antonio, TX on January 2006, after 52 years of public service.
He died Dec. 23, 2009 of pancreatic cancer in a Waco, TX hospice. He leaves behind 3 daughters, a son and 4 grandchildren.
