November 16, 2010 PATROL BASE SHANFIELD, Afghanistan — The dust of Patrol Base Shanfield turned to gold as the sun started a long plunge toward the Marjah countryside. As the Marines came forward to pay their final respects, it peeked over hesco walls and snuck under the camouflage netting that covered the place where they knelt in honor of 1st Lt. James R. Zimmerman.
President bestows the Medal of Honor to SSG Salvatore Giunta
Nov. 16, 2010 White House, President Barack Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to Staff Sgt. Salvatore Giunta for extraordinary bravery in the face of almost death. Giunta is the first living recipient of the award since the Vietnam War.
SSG Carlos A. Benitez (KIA) – Memorial Tribute Oct. 2010
On Oct. 14, 2010 3 soldiers were killed after being attacked by insurgents in Afghanistan including SSG Carlos Benitez. With a wife and two children living in Colorado and a mother with two siblings living in Dallas, the arrangements for SSG Carlos Benitez’s return were chaotic.

Pfc. Cody Board, 19, (KIA) returning to N. Texas
Pfc. Cody A. Board, 19, of McKinney, Texas, died Oct. 4, just two weeks shy of his 20th birthday, at Mirwais, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, Vilseck, Germany.
SSG Robert J. Miller posthumously awarded Medal of Honor
The president has bestowed the Medal of Honor this afternoon upon the family of Staff Sgt. Robert J. Miller, whose actions allowed seven of his Special Forces teammates and 15 Afghan soldiers to escape an ambush kill zone.
